Novelty Contact Lenses

Novelty contact lenses are contact lenses intended to help achieve physical change in the appearance of the eye – as opposed to prescription contact lenses which are intended to correct vision – though novelty contact lenses may also carry a prescription if the wearer needs it.
Unlike other non-prescription contact lenses – like the color contact lenses used in fashion – novelty contact lenses are generally not intended to look natural. However, all cosmetic contact lenses – including both novelty and fashion contact lenses – work their magic by covering the iris with a colored printed surface that alters the natural appearance of the eye.
Special Effect Contact Lenses
Special effect contact lenses are usually used to achieve a specific physical transformation. For example if you’re looking to dress up as a Vampire, you’ll want some piercing red vampire contacts to go with your fangs and pasty white skin. While there are thousands of different special effects you can achieve with special effect lenses, special effect contacts are generally divided between lower quality Halloween contact lenses used by the public, and higher-end theatrical contact lenses designed for movies and photoshoots.
Halloween Contact Lenses
These contact lenses are usually fairly cheap and disposable. They’re designed to complete a Halloween costume and can usually be found in many retail stores in Oct, but they can also be ordered online year round.

Theatrical Contact Lenses
Theatrical contact lenses are usually used in professional settings, usually for movies and photoshoots. Theatrical contact lenses carry a lot of the same designs as Halloween contact lenses, but they’re designed to cover the entire eye rather than just the cornea. This provides a more realistic and widere range of effects that look convincing even under a close up shot. Theatrical contact lenses are significantly more expensive than your average Halloween contacts, and cost an average of $300 a pair.
Other Popular Novelty Contact Lenses
Not all novelty contact lenses are worn as part of a Halloween costume or as special effects for movies. Below are some of the more popular novelty contact lenses being worn by trendy teens and young adults.
